Sabyasachi Mallik is not only the representative of the writer but also all the protective mind who fights for the freedom against the British ruler. The another character is Apurbo who represents the common citizen of Indian subcontinent who are deprived by the British ruler but have not the courage and urge mind who never arise their voice against British rulers.
Apurbo later becomes one of the members of the organization “Pather Dabi”. But he is such a cowardice man that he at last cheats with the organization. Sabyasachi mallik is a freedom desired men but he have no desire to break the old customs. Sabitri a powerful female character who devotes her life to saves the country from white rulers.
Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay has no wish to establish his political novel “Pather Dabi” but in situation he expresses it. But, after establishing the novel, the British Government banned this novel. Sharad Chandra Chattopadhyay writers a letter to Rabindranath Tagore to free the novel form forbidding. But even Rabindranath Tagore supports British ruler, he says they should not writes against British Government and ruling system.
But in that time the noble has reached to the all Bengali readers’ society. In spite of being banned this novel, its message is expanded all over the India. This novel focuses the new light on freedom. The new dimension of patriotism raised among the people. Sabyasachi Malik sacrifices all of his life to make the country free.
We first meet him in the novel, when Apurbo goes to police station ,but Sabyasachi Mallik always stays in the guise of citizen among common people, he express himself in police station as a worker of coal mine. When Savithri meets him in the jungle, there she finds himself really miserable condition.
Such a great man accepts sufferings only for the freedom of country. But at last Apurbo cheats with the organization for his own purpose and the exact location of the organization and about Sabyasachi mallick. He leaves the organization and takes an oath again for protest.
Such a great novel is rare in Bengali literature. This novel is not only a novel but also a great agenda of freedom fight against British colonial rules in Indian subcontinent.
