A man from Calcutta appointed as the post master of the post office. But in a few moments, he realizes that he is quite unable to fit in this village. Because he can’t communicate with the other’s as they work in the factory and he has to stay in the hut that is the mandatory post office.
Despite his small salary, he asks an orphan little girl to do his housework for him, and for that she has been given some food. The post master exactly don not have much work to do. Because there he does not get anyone to accompany him. So usually he writes poems on nature. As there is no one to talk, sometimes he uses to talk with Ratan.
Ratan is a very poor girl, who can’t get married at the age of 12-13 because of dowry, that his family can’t effort for her. The post master tries to teach her. Ratan also gets interested in it and very soon she starts learning them. But after a few days the post master gets sick because of the harsh environment of the village in the rainy season. Ratan takes a good care of him.
Soon he gets well. But decide to leave the village as soon as possible. He left the job and became ready to go back to Calcutta. But Ratan also wanted to go with him.
In those days they were very close, like friends. That is why she doesn’t want to leave him. She requests him to take her with him. But told that it is not possible and he promised that he will come back very soon for her and leave the village. Ratan was very upset and cried for him. And keep waiting for his returning.
